The Airfield Information Exchange -  Public Internet Forum

1) To promote the research of the archaeological resource of the civil and military airfields of the UK
2) To promote the conservation of extant buildings, by the transfer and dissemination of information regarding such structures
3) To bring together like-minded individuals and organisations who have an interest in, either in the ownership of, or association with airfield sites
4) To promote the transfer the experiences of serving at such sites
5) To promote the discussion of the not only the extant remains but also the history of such sites and their future
6) To bring together a community of interest which can perhaps, in future, have a voice and say in what happens to the artefacts of a significant part of the Country's (and Commonwealth's) history.

The Airfield Information Exchange -  Airfield Knowledge & Research.

Our membership and associates are amongst the best known and respected in the field of UK and commonwealth airfield history. They include published authors and airfield researchers & archaeologists. Whether you are looking for content for books magazines or simply researching family connections please get in touch. Conversely if you worked or served on airfields and would like to share your memories and experiences we'd be delighted to hear from you and record your testimony for posterity.

The AIRFIELD RESEARCH GROUP was formed thirty years ago in 1978 by a small nucleus of enthusiasts. Coincidentally this was the same year that the first book dedicated to airfields appeared (‘Airfields of the Eighth - Then and Now’). It was also a year before the first Action Stations book was launched. The aims of the Group are to research, collate and disseminate material relating to the history, development, architecture, current status and uses of current and disused, civil and military airfields of the United Kingdom.

The Group publishes the Airfield Review four times a year - around 120 issues have appeared to date (a previous editor and chairman have included Norwich Paul). Contributors have included a number of respected aviation related authors, and recent issues have covered in-depth reports regarding Flying Boat bases, Fleet Air Arm stations, O.T.U. Organisation, the First Hard Runway in the UK, and Satellite Landing Grounds. A large number of airfields, some virtually unknown have been extensively researched. Associated subjects have included Ammunition Depots, Flying Control and radar/radio aids, control caravans, railway systems, and the RAF Maintenance Organisation.
